Synopsis
Written in political exile by one of Argentina's greatest statesmen and intellectuals, this work is ostensibly a biography of the gaucho "barbarian" Juan Facundo Quiroga. It is also a complex and passionate investigation of the dialectic of civilization and barbarism. Sarmiento explores the impact of Argentinian geography on the life of the gaucho, chronicles the upbringing and the often bloody political and military adventures of Facundo, and examines the reign of Juan Manuel de Rosas, the tyrannical ruler of Argentina at the time of Sarmiento's writing.
Buchrückseite
Written in political exile by one of Argentina's greatest statesmen and intellectuals and long known to English-speaking readers as Life in the Argentine Republic in the Days of the Tyrants, Facundo (1845) is ostensibly a biography of the gaucho "barbarian" Juan Facundo Quiroga. Combining history, sociology, and political commentary, Sarmiento explores the impact of Argentine geography on the life of the gaucho; chronicles the often bloody political and military adventures of Facundo; examines the reign of the tyrannical ruler Juan Manuel de Rosas; and ponders the future of Argentina. This edition includes an informative introduction and a chronology of Sarmiento's life and times. It also restores the original author's note that was dropped for the 1868 English-language edition - and that is crucial to our understanding of Sarmiento and his views.

Zeitloses Buch, sehr gut geschrieben, polemisch. Sehr empfehlenswert für Leser, die sich für argentinische und lateinamerikanische Geschichte interessieren. Leider auf Deutsch nicht erhältlich.
Sarmiento describes Argentina in the years following the revolution from Spain as schizophrenically divided between the homegrown gauchos, masterful horsemen but largely uneducated forces of nature, and the intellectuals in Buenos Aires, imbued with ideas of the enlightenment, justice and democracy. The struggle initially went to the strong men of the Pampas who terrorized the rest of the population. . In a way this book resonates with the intellectual divisions in America today with the split between rural America and the globalization of America’s more sophisticated coastal cities. Sarmiento’s villain sounds like a decidedly more violent Trump.
Bought this for a college class. It was somewhat slow at times and the writing wasn't the best but it's still a good book that gives the reader first-hand insight in to an interesting subject.
The history of Argentina in its early years and how the various regions produced leaders whose vision of the new country varied and led to wars and eventual peace.
I have been to Argentina six times and I believe this book together with Martin Fierro by Jose Hernandez have given me a greater appreciation of the birthpains that have created such a great nation ...
This was actually a great book! I bought it for a class and became really interested in the story that was being told.
